OPEN FORUM WEEK continues:

THE PRESS CONFERENCE

The day started off with me fighting of calls from everyone and their mother. Are you flipping formats? Radio Trade Magazines, Local News Papers, ect.

Today The Buzz Held Their Press Conference.

The agenda....The future of The Buzz.

The crowd was at a fever pitch as local media and many Buzz listeners showed up in hopes of being the first to hear the news and enjoy the milk and cookies we provided for refreshments. Many of the listeners showed up with the fear that the station was flipping formats. And being the sick bastards we are we ran with it.

Starting rumors and leading the listeners to believe that the station was going through some major changes.

The major change? The station will no longer be know as 100.5 The Buzz North Florida's New Rock. The new name.....100.5 The Buzz Gainesville's Rock Alternative.

That's Right! Much to the sadness of WRUF we are not going anywhere.

However The Morning Buzz did send over 2 dozen dough nuts to their local Lex and Terry host as a token of good will. P.S. Sorry about flyering your studio windows. As far as the new slogan...We think that it really brands the station to its true identity. We are an alternative station and we are in Gainesville. It's a match made in heaven. We take the position that we are Gainesville's station and now we can say it.

The other change.....oh there is more. Salvation The Punk Rock Revival has added another hour.
It moves from 2 hours to 3 hours. Sunday Nights from 5-8pm.

Rumor....rumor....could there be a new night show coming to the airwaves at 100.5 The Buzz? Stay tuned.....PD MoJo's lips are sealed!

Hello Mister Jonathan and all my friends out there in cyber/radio/showbiz!

I'd like to alert you to the release of a really cool Tsunami Relief benefit album I'm involved with...it's the first release from Integrity Records, a new label run by the folks behind one of the biggest one-stops on the West Coast, and 100% of the proceeds go to CARE...it's called "Of Hands And Hearts" and features 49 artists on two CDs with a super-low $13.98 list, including tracks (many previously unreleased) from such notable names as Supersuckers (as well as singer Eddie Spaghetti), Annabella Lwin (Bow Wow Wow), Adrian Belew (Bowie, Talking Heads, King Crimson), The Fixx, Wang Chung and, yes, Dramarama (shameless self-promotion), along with more than 40 more.

I encourage anybody who has the power to program songs from this epic compilation to do so...with so many cuts to choose from, there's definitely "something for everyone"... I'd also like to put the call out to all currently "underutilized" radio & record industry professionals who would like to practice their craft for a good cause pro bono...please write to me (john@johneasdale.com) and we can discuss these things, as well as many others...to read more about (and listen to some tracks from) the CD, go to http://www.ocregister.com/ocr/2005/03/25/sections/entertainment/et_music/article_456036.php

Thanks Johnny for the heads up. Looks great for a great cause.

Open forum huh? I'm testing a song called "Crabbucket" by K-OS. Anyone heard this? Never heard of the guy before, but he's on Astralworks. I think it's brilliant and EXACTLY what Alternative/Modern Rock needs. I love 'em but I'm feeling the need to break up the Green Day/Killers stronghold. Rubin Channel 93.3 KTCL Ft. DWIGHT TWILLEY: new album is out now on Digital Musicworks International

JL: Welcome back Dwight. It's been a while, actually 2001. The Luck album. The gap between 47 Moons and that album was only 4 years, because it's now being released but you did finish it late last year. Curious as to why so long from hearing from you, musically?... I did mention that gap, but you also took time between recordings from 1986-1999 when you put out the Tulsa album. As a fan, that's a long time to wait. What did you do all those years? Performing only? Resting in Oklahoma?

DT: I have to answer both at the same time. Between 86’ & 99’ I was actually busier than it may have appeared. Yes, I did some touring. Actually, “The Luck” was recorded in L.A. in the early 90’s. I was involved in the reissue of the Dwight Twilley Band’s first two LP’s “Sincerely” and “Twilley Don’t Mind.” I authored and promoted a book called “Questions from Dad.” Picked up a Platinum record for my song “Why you Wanna Break my Heart” on the “Wayne’s World” soundtrack. My house was destroyed by the Northridge Earthquake so I decided to relocate to Tulsa. In 1996 I worked with Capitol-EMI on the release of “XXI” the best of Dwight Twilley. Then I released a rarities package on an indie label called “Between the Cracks.” After the release of “Tulsa” in 1999 it was reissued in Europe in 2000 where we did a promotional tour. Then we invested a lot of time in building The Big Oak Studio, (our magic laboratory) where we recorded two new albums “47 Moons” our new release and “Have a Twilley Christmas” which will be released as a ten song LP this fall. I don’t remember much resting during all of this.

JL: 47 Moons is a fantastic pop album. What were the inspirations to make this album, that according to the CD, took 1 year, 3 months, 2 weeks, two days, 1 hour and 26 minutes?-LOL

DT: For the love of God!! I finally had my own studio. No one could tell us when to start or stop recording. My wife Jan engineered. Bill Pitcock IV was a phone call away it was so exciting and addictive that we were actually depressed when we began to discover that both records were, I guess….finished.

JL: How close do you pay attention to what music has been out there over the past few years? In other words, has any artists come close to what your taste in music are? If so, who(m) might they be?

DT: I’ve never really been a listener I don’t like to be influenced by what other artists are doing. If I need to be inspired I’ll listen to The Beatles. I haven’t heard anything better since.

JL: As a fan, your voice is still the Dwight Twilley we all listen to and love. Your song writing is as solid as ever. Having said that, you are your biggest critic, so what would you say might have been either left off the album that you regret...and if there isn't anything...how about something that you would maybe change? Anything at all?

DT: Not a damn thing! LOL

JL: What is Dwight Twilley like at this point in his life that would be different than earlier on?

DT: The new Dwight has his own studio and can’t be stopped. He’s free from the stress of the Major Labels. The new Dwight lives in a small beautiful town where there is no Ventura Freeway.

JL: I'm sure touring is next up, but what else will you want to do now that the album is coming out? Anything on your wish list?

DT: We’re thinking about a live album, I’ve never done one. It might be fun.

You can check out Dwight further at www.dwighttwilley.com

Willobee Gets No Respect

Here is a not so serious, just pure fun Instant Message between WEQX, Manchester VT GM/Owner Brooks Brown and myself yesterday. New PD Willobee had IM’d me an hour earlier very excited to let me know he finally was going on-air to do his shift. Boy was he stoked! Brooks wanted to let me know also…so here is what follows.

Brooks: Your boy finally went on his regular scheduled air shift today
JL: I know…how cool is that?
Brooks: For an old barnacle it’s pretty amazing
JL: lol
Brooks: He’s way too old sounding
JL: How old?
Brooks: Too classic rock in his delivery…which by the way I knew from listening to his demo he sent but you must help him sound like he’s cooler and hipper then he really is, he’ll never make it on MTV
JL: ok
Brooks: Kick his ass Jon
JL: I will
Brooks: He makes Wolfman Jack sound young
JL: This is so funny…you should let me run this on website…is that ok? I think people will know it’s only in fun, and at same time in a subtle way Will will get hint
Brooks: Really corny New Jersey jokes
JL: Ha
Brooks: yeah…ok
Brooks: He’s already in trouble with me and my wife ‘cause he brings his dog to work and she pisses all over the place…on a clients shoe the other day
JL: Uh oh…I hope Will bent down and wiped the clients shoe
Brooks: He also has the sales department complaining about the way he drives when he goes out on important sales calls that have a programming or promotion element involved…You know sales people have to drive rather efficiently and with some amount of urgency…well Willobee drives like a “little old lady”…of course only children from Flushing (Queen’s NY) don’t drive…they take cabs
JL: lol
Brooks: He was so frightened about moving to Vermont he went out and bought a brand new 4x4
JL: Your description is killing me
Brooks: He also still believes that Vermont is quaint and neato…he also believes in the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, and that he might get a raise soon…now I’ve got go and watch Jeopardy…good night my friend.
JL: Have a good one Brooks

Of course…Brooks is happy with Will…otherwise he wouldn’t be kidding. Will…call me and I’ll give you some pointers. Lay off the Jersey jokes…ok?…lol

Ayo makes a plea for ASH!

Would everyone please wake up and listen to ASH?

Yea, I know...its the year of Marquee alt releases. Does that guarantee you'll have the best sounding new rock on your station? Hell no, it doesn't.

Thank god for the Cornerstone player.....the song wouldn't even be out there at all! Ash's poor,
stuggling label took forever to service us an advance of the record.....a quickly-made CD-R with a xeroxed chain letter.Warner Bros is supposed to jump on and work it, BUT NOT UNTIL IT SELLS?!?! What the fuck?

MELTDOWN is a monster hit...and KDGE is close on it...maybe if, I dont know, ONE more program director, OR record lable person could show a little bit of enthusiasm, maybe MY PD would get pushed over the ledge and give it a well-deserved shot here. Now, please....for Christs sake, put the new Nine Inch Nails down for FIVE SECONDS and listen to the next big thing. That song is a hit, and you'll hear it instantly.
AYO APD/MD, KDGE Dallas TX

This was forwarded to me by Brian Miller. I don't know where it came from originally?
But,
I thought it was amusing enough to share with you.

Some of the artists from the '60s are revising their hits with new lyrics to accommodate
Aging Baby Boomers. They include:

Herman's Hermits "MRS. BROWN, YOU'VE GOT A LOVELY WALKER" The Bee Gees "HOW CAN YOU MEND A BROKEN HIP" Bobby Darin "SPLISH, SPLASH, I WAS HAVIN' A FLASH" Ringo Starr "I GET BY WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM DEPENDS" Roberta Flack "THE FIRST TIME EVER I FORGOT YOUR FACE" Johnny Nash "I CAN'T SEE CLEARLY NOW" Paul Simon "FIFTY WAYS TO LOSE YOUR LIVER" Commodores "ONCE, TWICE, THREE TIMES TO THE BATHROOM" Marvin Gaye "I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPE NUTS" Procol Harem "A WHITER SHADE OF HAIR" Leo Sayer "YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE NAPPING" The Temptations "PAPA'S GOT A KIDNEY STONE" ABBA "DENTURE QUEEN" Elvis "HEARTBREAK HOSPICE" Dylan "LIKE A KIDNEY STONE" Queen "WE WERE THE CHAMPIONS" Beatles "WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY MEDS" Dion "LIMPAROUND SUE" The Rolling Stones "LIMPING-JACK FLASH" Tony Orlando "KNOCK THREE TIMES ON THE CEILING IF YOU HEAR ME FALL" Helen Reddy "I AM WOMAN, HEAR ME SNORE" Willie Nelson "ON THE THRONE AGAIN" John Prine "PINK CATARACT" John Denver "ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH (FIBER)" Lesley Gore "IT'S MY PROCEDURE AND I'LL CRY IF I WANT TO"

The "Name" game continues;

Vis a vis last week's question: Bob FM is licensed through Joel Folger, who we all may remember as a former PD of KDGE in Dallas. I'd have to say of all the Jack or Bob stations in the states, Bob in Austin is doing the best. It has just laid waste to every 25+ station in Austin.

The Alice stations were more of a Modern AC idea, by the way. Frank Wood named Alice in Denver, but got the format idea from what Tom Barnes was doing in California. Dave in Atlanta is also very different from Jack & Bob. It's more of a true rock format. I don't think you'll be hearing Sister Sledge on Dave in Atlanta.

As to its longevity, that depends on the local execution. Joel Folger and Garry Wall can't be everywhere at once.

Jim Kerr Director of Talent & Creative Services Pollack Media Group/Dallas 1121 Beachview Street #2214 Dallas, Texas 75218

Thank you for the history lesson Jim. It's obvious that this is a hot topic. I am curious though
...I get the point that all the "Name" stations are probably different...but do you agree or
disagree that listeners once they hear all these different "Names", they will still think that
they are alike? In other words...does the average person know the "difference"?

Hit the road "Jack": Q of the week comes to an end

Great…Alice, Bob, Bubba, Ralph, Joe, Jack, Jonathan, Bruce (gay channel), and the new Urban format Shaniqua are all a joke. Unlike alt super serving narrow target, the “insert name here” train wreck format…is too unfocused, heaving shit at the wall to see what sticks will be too bipolar in its appeal. Great for cume, no TSL or loyalty. Two different types of audiences will tune in and out every 4 minutes, sucking the ‘oh wow’ appeal dry in 1 book. Quick fix.

I love the old school CHR strategy of variety, but I don’t get who this appeals to. With us, you know it’s a 30-year-old dude, and KROQ is for 13-year-old suburbanite trustafarians. Imaging, promotions, content, etc…all in one package.

Huey Lewis, Motley Crue, Pearl Jam, Deniece Williams, Eddy Grant, Seals and Crofts, and Supertramp in the same 30 minutes? What are you? Who are you? What’s the deal? Poorly branded. Show me a person with the Go Go’s and Dan Fogelberg on their iPod?
Kerry Gray PD WEDG, Buffalo NY

OK, so now it’s my turn to try and sort out what all, or at the very least what some of these “Name” formats are, etc.

Scott Lowe pointed out that the “Jack” station originated from Canadian internet radio. We know that Simmons Media began “Jack” months ago in Salt Lake City, and Infinity’sArrow” station was flipped to “Jack” this past week in Los Angeles. (Yes, I’ve sent two e-mails to Kevin already telling him I’m perfect for the station…but probably won’t hear back. I also sent him an e-mail to describe whatJackcan do in LA? He hasn’t responded, and probably won’t) so, the first question that arises is…does anyone have a patent, trademark, or whatever on “Jack”?*(see below)

Before I get to “Bob” and the recent barrage of “Name” stations, let’s go back to “Alice”, which began years ago as a Triple A (Adult Rock) station that was in Denver and San Francisco, and other cities I believe.

Then XM Satellite began with the “Fred” and “Ethyl” channels. “Fred”, alternative oldies, and “Ethyl” their new music alternative station.

Then, thanks to Dave Beasing making me aware of the “Dave” station in Atlanta, I started to sweat…holy shit…what is going on here. Dave said on this site a few days ago that “Dave” is different from “Jack" and “Bob”.

KTZO in Albuquerque flips to “Fred”, so my question is…does anyone have dibs on a name? That station is not XM Satellite? Right?

In a conversation with CD101’s Jack DeVoss…he informs me that there is a “Ted” station in Columbus. Hmm…Jeff Ballentine from WBNS, never mentioned that in his post back on Monday.

Then I see that Chicago’ now has a station calling itself “The Stever”. Is someone named Steve running it?

Another question would be, if Infinity does have a trademark on*Jack”, then how come there is one in Salt Lake as I stated above, not owned by Infinity. Note to Kevin Weatherly; why didn’t you call it “Doug” as in in Doug “The Slug, Sluggo” Roberts. That would have made more sense…Doug is right there in the building anyway.

See…according to Bob Lewis who programs “Bob” in Austin, the presentation is all about “Bob likes this, Bob’s girlfriend doesn’t care for this song, so you probably won’t be hearing it very much”, and it goes on and on about “Bob”. This makes sense to me, as far as the way the station liners sound.

OK, musically…these stations have expanded their libraries from 2-300 to 1,500-2000 songs. OK. More variety…so in the quest to categorize this“name”revolution…Media base decides to call it a format “Variety Rock”. The programming is supposed to be a lot of “oh wow” songs, when I doubt you will hear too many deep tracks. As I said earlier in the week…it’s “Hits Driven Free Form” radio. Many of you keep bringing up iPod. And, theses stations are profiling themselves as just that. Your personal iPod on terrestrial radio.

I agree with the few that have said that that is not the stuff that would be on their iPod’s. I have thousands of songs in my iTunes that are quite a variety…but NOT the stuff you will hear on these “Name” stations. Look, I get it…radio is trying to compete with satellite, and also trying to break out of a boring non-creative funk.

But the main question remains …a quick fix fad, or are they a long-term format, or formats, because they will all say they are different from the others.

Now ponder this. If it is a long-term format…will we see a “Bob” and a “Jack” in the same market? I say yes, if they become successful. It happened with alternative back in 93 and spread out all over the country. Multiple alternative stations. Easy listening stations at times in the past might have had three stations in a market.

And, finally…if “Bobjackteddavefred” become popular, what format suffers the most; Hot AC, Alternative, or maybe some Oldies stations?

Here’s how I look at it. To summarize it all. It’s a sneaky way to say “we play the best of the 70s, 80s, 90, and today’s hit music"…without saying it. How original is that? It’s also another way for consultants to sneak in another curveball, and make money.

What say you? --Jonathan

*UPDATE: Thanks to Richard Sands. "Jack" is trademarked by consultant Gary Wall.
To get the "Jack" format you pay a licensing fee. Wall and Weatherly worked
together at one time at Q106 in San Diego.

Q of the week: "Jack", "Bob", and keep going, all of a sudden...it's
name radio. Mediabase calls it "Variety Rock", because everything
has to have a catagory, you know? I smell consultants are coming
back in vogue. Tomorrow I will address my feelings on this matter.

or this concept which is now spreading to markets around the US and Canada. Click over to http://www.jack.fm The Jack format has been popular in everyone's living room since the birth of recorded music. I think this new trend of deep playlists, popularized by Satellite Radio, iPods, stations like Indie 103.1 and Jack is good for radio's tarnished image (since consolidation). The only way I think the Jack brand could work long term is to constantly refresh and rest the titles. Other stationality factors should still apply such as personality, high caliber promotions, marketing and imaging. I could elaborate more with my own Jack theories regarding things like TSL, cume, branding and sales, but you'd have to pay me first. :-)
Scott Lowe B104 Allentown, PA

"It's like having your iPod hooked up to your car, without your iPod being hooked up to your car." Well, guess what? My iPod IS hooked up to my car, and it's a FAR better mix of music than the trainwreck known as Jack! Sorry, I don't see much of a difference between this and (N)arrow.
Whose 40GB iPod would never play A Flock Of George Michael.

*Hey...let's give Marc a plug

*Ahoy! Long-time music industry executive Marc Nathan is pleased to announce the launch of his new record label, FLAGSHIP Recordings, this summer. Nathan, who has worked in a variety of promotion and A&R posts at a number of labels over a 34-year-period (including stints at the Vice Presidential level at Sire, Atlantic, and within the Universal Music Group), plans to release a minimum of four titles this year on FLAGSHIP. North American distribution for the label is in the process of being concluded and will be announced shortly. FLAGSHIP is a full service music company.

I think there IS a good case for them to survive, as long as they remain fresh and update their catalog every few months, or whevever works... as long as it's not the same 200-300 songs over and over and over - that can get tiring really quick. Of course I say this coming from Cincinnati, where the classic rock station hasn't updated its catalog in 10 years, Skynyrd, Pink Floyd and Bob Seger still rule the airwaves, and everyone is so damned uptight about something. (That last paragraph is sarcasm... maybe. Take it as such.)

On your radio soon!

“Yeah when things get stupid
And I just don’t know
Where to find my happy…
I listen to the music
From the AM radio” -Everclear “AM Radio” 2000

A couple of weeks ago, I was doing my often groveling for a banner from Dave Lombardi of Astralwerks. He said no. Hey, that’s all right, he has every right to say no if he wants to. He did say something curious to me though. He said that I’ve ruffled some feathers with the site, but that was not the reason for the “no”. Without divulging any names, he said that someone or more than one person had said, “who is he anyway? all he had was an AM radio station”. Dave said he defended me, which I believe he did. We’ve known each other since 89, and he was there when KUKQ exploded on the scene. He felt it and was apart of it.

All I can say to who, or whomever was stupid to say such a thing, is either they are new to this industry, or power (ego) has gone to his or her head. I don’t need to justify my career to anyone, so fuck off. Do the research; FM radio was also a major part of my career.

Ok, now let’s get to the core of why I bring up all this about AM radio.

Months ago KHRO in El Paso flipped from alternative to Spanish, if you people remember? Joe Garcia, also known as JoJo or MojoJoJo, was devastated. Did you stay in touch with him? I guess not. When I spoke with him yesterday, I asked him a simple question. “JoJo, how many people have stayed in touch with you?” His reply was “You, Van O, John Dimaio”, and he mentioned two other persons, which I forgot to write down. Wow. Only 5 people. Since he wasn’t in a position to help anyone. Pretty sad, huh?

So, now it’s time to unveil the news to you that in mid-April KHRO (aka Hero) returns on High Definition AM 1650. The station will lean more extreme, and its slogan will be “Listener’s win, Hero’s never die”. This is all based on the result of many thousands of e-mails sent to the station, and same throng of e-mails and letters to The El Paso Times. So, management has decided to give Joe what he wants and deserves, another shot with rock.

When the station flipped, the last two songs played were “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams” by Green
Day
, and Korn’s version of “Another Brick In The Wall”. My suggestions to kick off the revitalized KHRO is Foo Fighters “Hero”…but maybe YOU have a better suggestion…so please -mail me yours…and I will pass them on to JoJo.

Welcome back bro!

Hey, how about another welcome back. Former KCPX Salt Lake City MD Brandon Pappas just began his new gig on Monday. He is now PD at active rocker WMZK Wausau, Wisconsin. He will also be PD of WJMT-AM a Classic Country sister station. He can be reached at 715.536.4089 brandon@blazerocks.com

Q of the week: "Jack" , "Bob", "Fred", Dave", "Ben"...the new
revolution of radio...yes, no, or what is going on here?

JL -The longevity of the "Jack" and "Bob" formats will depend on the programmers in the individual markets and how they play to what works locally. The "Jack" in Dallas sounds completely different than the "Bob" in Austin or the "Jack" in Los Angeles. There's vast diversity and an infinite of music choices that this format provides that others don't. Unlike other formats I've worked where we drive who and what we are, with this format, we simply let the listener take what they want from us. This new format (Arbitron is calling it "Adult Hits") has a chance to survive with it's continued mix of "Oh Wows", upbeat Classic Hits and 80s and 90s hits from different formats that are too old for contemporary formats and too new for "Oldies" and "Classic Hits" formats.
Ian McCain PD KJQN "Jack" Salt Lake City UT

I can't speculate on the success of "Jack" nor "Bob", but I'm quite certain that the new "all
Ramones all the time" format called "Jon" will be a hit!
Kerry Marsico TVT Records Los Angeles CA

HELP!

I have a question that only a late 80'-early 90's Phoenix radio guru could answer....Help me obi-wan, er, I mean, Jonathan L.

I was an avid KQ listener and there was a song in heavy rotation in 89 or 90 that I always assumed was the Sidewinders (kind of grungy, kind of jangly) but it apparently is not ...dammit ...I don't remember the title, but it had male and female vocalists trading lines, and the female sang "You're in a mess this time..." and I can't remember more beyond the melody ..Does this ring ANY bells with you ?

I miss the KQ days, my band Big Orange Thing played The Silver Dollar, The Sun Club, and Hollywood Alley in those days, and KQ was ALL I listened to ! Thanks to you, the Bone Momma, and Leah Miller, I was saved from Corporate pap. Thank you, thank you, thank you, A fan forever. Chris Quigley Chicago Illinois (via Phoenix)

Ok, Chris...with the help of Jeanette last night on Google, I think we came up with
the answer you were looking for. The band is Falling Joys. The Aussie band put the
album below out in 1990. It was originally an import and then later on IRS Records.

1990 Album Wish List (Volt 29) 1. Shot In Europe 2. Lost Addiction 3. Robinson Crusoe 4. Things To Come 5. Lock It 6. Tunnel Vision 7. Jennifer 8. Dream Hangover 9. Nearly A Sin 10. Puppy Drink 11. Q of the week continues: "Bob", "Jack", and throw in "Dave", "Fred",
and now MIX 95.7 Philadelphia just flipped to "Ben". Is this a zany craze
or is it for real and going to be long lasting?

Jonathan...two phrases...first thought... 1. 70's oldies... 2. 80's format...

Now, on a serious note...depends on a lot of factors...the competetive 'hole'...Does Hot A/C suck? How much advertising budget will the incumbent spend to defend with...? what if there is NO Hot A/C ala Canada... Also...if you're going to do it...it is CRITICAL TO DO IT RIGHT! (See Kevin Weatherly.)

Dallas launched with big budget advertising campaing, great strategy and tactical...same thing with KCBS...which is why Kevin is a key proponent.. If you do a launch correctly...research, talent, promotions..and CONSISTENTLY...then it's possible...however. Against a properly programmed, with war chest Hot A/C...my guess is still a 12-18 month format...when launched properly (TV, print, etc.) does damage to the Hot A/C stations for two book minimum...keep watch of Mix in Dallas....hit hard in book # 1....starting to rebound.

But the real point radio programmers are missing...think like a general manager...be a general manager...even if it IS a two year format....if you're in Dallas or L.A...how much money can you make for a rating point...? and 25-54 demo with a 30-40/35+ core...and that's the name of the game....not programming...money and P&L. Also...If it IS a format, not just a money making machine/retirement fund for the syndication/creators...then, a morning show will be CRITICAL. But one thing is for certain...if you're getting your butt kicked in the ratings or there is no other way to go (see Dallas - buffeted by CHR's and Churbans), then it's a viable 12-18 month way of making money for the company...and not a bad one at that. Best regards,
Jeff Ballentine Program Director WBNS 97.1 More Music, More Variety, Columbus OH

Jonathan, Good question. I believe the ability of these stations to succeed depends on what the programmers are trying to do with them and the tools they are given to win in their defined situation. What do you mean I didn't say anything!? Here we have FRED and this is my opinion of it in this market based on what they are doing. As one person who will remain nameless told me it stands for Fucking Radio Eats Dick!

Because I was blown out to make room for Fred, I agree. I hear they are doing quite nicely in generating revenue. I also hear they spent $100,000 last month on advertising. Spend money to make money. Now there's a thought!! Give that genius a raise!! Fire someone else if you have to and stay on budget. Don't forget ... cut where you can. And you always CAN. Our budget was cut damn near completely out. We still provided ratings and we were fired. Yes, I am still bitter but Jonathan you must admit, I'm getting better!

Alternative can't survive because "our listeners" won't fill out a ratings book, are too into computers and satellite and have an identity crisis. I was told Fred will work because it is the great answer to satellite radio. Really? With satellite you get the exact kind of music you want to hear when you want to hear it. With Fred you never know what you are getting, but it will be familiar. Satellite no commercials. Fred commercials. In addition Fred here is run without jocks so there is no local flavor. No contests. Styrofoam radio. To be fair it is a different demo that Fred is going after than we were. Instead of getting the active, passionate 27 year old male, you get someone who needs acceptable background music. Way to conquer! Peace,
Don Kelley Still stuck in New Mexico

Hi Jonathan, I was in Austin this past weekend, actually, and heard some street buzz on "Bob". I found myself flipping to it every 10 min. or so. I really think that station has a future in that market. However, Austin is an entire world on to its self. Do I think it could work, lets say here in San Antonio?...no. This town (SA) is bi-polar. it loves its hip hop and rock too much. Would I, personally, like to see it here? Absolutely. I only wish this city was as diverse as Austin.

AUSTIN CITY LIMIT-TATIONS: SXSW Day two...over and out

Thursday was going to be my big day. I had to cram a lot in. I slept until 10 AM. Holy shit! I didn’t think I would sleep that late, but on the other hand…where was I going to go early anyway? JJ got up around 11AM and offered cereal. That was cool. The weather was going to be a lot nicer than Wednesday, so JJ decided he would take his motorcycle for a drive down to San Antonio. I should explain at this point that JJ drove down from Ft. Wayne, and this was more of a vacation and SXSW thing for him. His pick-up was pulling a van with his bike inside.

I jumped in a cab and headed for commitment #2, The Lucky Lounge on W. 5th St. The occasion was the joint party with Playlist Magazine and Digital Musicworks International. Wanted to say hi to Eric Cole, who I had promised I would attend. I not only got to see Eric, but to my surprise, someone I had worked with for years at the Album Network, Michael Vogel was DMI’s Director of West Coast Promotions. Now that was a pleasant surprise. We caught up filling in the gaps since we last saw one another. He and Eric introduced me to Jenny Dedes, Director of Mid-West Promotions, and Roger Mayer (who I think I’ve met before), Senior Vice President of Marketing and Promotion. As I swallowed a couple of chicken Quesadillas, I listened to two of their signings do acoustic sets. The beautiful Larisa Bryski, and redlightmusic. Ronnie Montrose was somewhere but I couldn’t find him. I just wanted to say hello. He is their senior head of A&R. Oh well. I stayed a little over an hour, and then made my way to my final commitment, the TVT showcase at the Hard Rock Café on 6th Street. I loved walking as opposed to taking cabs.

I got there just in time to see John Perrone outside and to hear the last waning moments of Oliver Black. I went inside to catch TSAR, who is now on TVT. I saw them when they were with Hollywood years back. Man, have they improved. Two new members, and a huge ball of energy. Their sound is right for this time period. Really dug ‘em. Ran into buddy, WBUZ PD Nashville’s Russ Schenck and his wife Bethany. Also saw Tazy, who I had run into the night before, and the big surprise was seeing Jerry Rubino. I guess we both forgot to tell each other we were going to Austin. Also saw Chris Stowers and his wonderful wife. Oh, and I ran into the always smiling WRLT APD/MD Reverend Keith Coes. Love that guy. This was a fun time.

Next band up was the band that just blew me away…Denmark’s The Blue Van. Wearing a cap similar to AC/DC’s Brian Johnson, lead singer Steffen was terrific!! I really got into their set. I also spoke briefly with Steffen outside after their performance. I then stuck around for a few songs by a band that I worked to radio and love, Ambulance LTD. Russ wanted to go to catch Ben Lee, and I also wanted to see Ben, so off the two of us went.

As we arrived at the New West Records Party at Club DeVille on Red River Street, we just missed Ben’s set. But we did get a moment with him, so I took a photo of Russ and Ben. We then weaved our way through the club outside to hang with New West’s Steve Nice and his beautiful wife. We caught a good portion of Nic Armstrong & The Thieves. Nic was better live, than what I thought of the album (see my review of the New Music page).

Russ and I then sauntered through the streets of Austin making our way to the 10th annual 101X
(KROX) Industry Soiree back on 6th Street.

It was at this time that my cell phone rung, and it was a not very happy JJ Fabini. His motorcycle had blown oil big time South of Austin, and after a numerous amount of cab rides and dropping the bike off at a dealership, JJ was wiped out and back at the hotel. We decided that we would meet up later on for a dinner that we were invited to by John Perrone and Gary Jay.

As Russ and I walked up the stairs at Buffalo Billiards, I felt like I had achieved all my commitments, and this would just be gravy. It was, as it turned out. The upstairs room was filled with pretty much everyone that I know, and then some. Jim McGuinn, Corbin Pierce, Geordie Gillespie, Rob Goldklang, Christine Chiapetta (who was on the plane I took from Denver to Austin, via Burbank, and so many others. I do have to apologize to one of my favorite people who always take my phone calls, Q101 Chicago APD/MD Jacent Jackson. He came up to me, and said “Jacent, remember me?” I said “of course”, but I didn’t want to go into a story on how I really can’t see well without my glasses. I really have a fuzzy time without them. I did have my sunglasses, which are prescription, but they were in my pocket. I have to be real close up to truly know who anyone is. So I do apologize Jacent, and anyone else I might have missed.

I met up with JJ and we went to Truluk, a very snazzy upscale restaurant. Besides Perrone and Jay, there were others from TVT, and KSRX San Antonio PD Mark Landis and his wife Deborah, plus the new KDHT Austin PD Bob Lewis, who is programming “Bob”. He was great! I mean the guy sounds like the guy Bob on the original episodes of Becker. Lewis is animated and was pretty thorough on explaining the “Bob” format to us. He’s so passionate, that when I asked a certain question, he challenged me to go outside…lol. After the dinner JJ was now even more wiped from his day, and I felt like I saw enough people, so we decided to call it quits for the day. The next morning JJ drove me to the airport, and poof…off I went back to Los Angeles.

I’ll sum it up in three words. Glad I went.

Guy Chadwick (House Of Love), Chris Candido, Mungo Jerry, Timothy Dalton, Brad Hall,
Peter Banks (Genesis), Roger Hodgson (Supertramp), Soloman Burke, Chris O' Donnell

Q of the week: As the new formats "Jack" and "Bob" (*Dave is
probably on the way-lol) keep launching ("Arrow" in LA just
flipped to "Jack"), I'm curious to know what you think the
longevity of these "Hits driven free form" stations will be? Keep
in mind, back in the 80s and early 90s, very few thought that
"alternative" would last. The new PD of the "Bob" station in
Austin made a very good case to me and others at a dinner the
other night. Harry Chapin into EMF is one example he used.

The general idea is a good one-- a kind of iPod on the air. Maybe they could so something real radical and forward-thinking and hire music fanatics as DJs, then the stations might actually sound like an iPod someone would want to listen to. I love the cross-format idea and the relatively big libraries but keeping the sound down to a narrow band of hits sounds like they're looking for trouble. If only they didn't feel the need for homogenization. I bet your pal at the "Bob" station in Austin would be a hero for playing "You're Gonna Miss Me" by the 13th Floor Elevators and Jack here in L.A. would be smart to play "A Million Miles Away" by The Plimsouls but would a corporate PD in either market understand that (or have heard of either song or artist?). Corporatization and artistic endeavors just doesn't fit. It's like running a marathon with an iron ball tied to one ankle.
Howie Klein Former President Reprise Records, Los Angeles CA

Howie, I would hardly call him my pal...I just met him...but you raise good points.

*Dave FM is already on in Atlanta and doing well, although it's very different musically from most of the Jack's and Bob's.

Comment: When I was a kid, radio had an element of unpredictability. You never knew what song or off-the-wall comment or crazy contest was next, and that kept you tuned in to find out. Now, in an age of safe playlists and narrow music formats, an air of unpredictability really stands out. As marketing author Seth Godin would say, it's a 'purple cow.'
Dave Beasing Jacobs Media Los Angeles CA 818.762.3858

I love the concept of Jack, and the first hour was pretty fucking cool. I think as long as they avoid playing OLD TIME ROCK AND ROLL (which I've bloody heard twice already - WHO CARES?!?) and get into the cool, interesting-to-hear songs that have fallen by the wayside over the years, it could have a very long life. There are THOUSANDS of cool songs to play (I've got over 3,000 in my player alone, and I dare say most people would know a good chunk of them), and Top 40 worked for many, many years. Narrow casting will always have a place, but so does 'everything' bagel radio, and it's been missing for nearly 20 years now. I'd love to have a hand in programming it - it's basically what I've been driving around listening to on 80+ mix CD's (and, more recently my RIO Player - which blows lame ass iPod out of the water) for years and years now (although I have a lot more PIXIES and
KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND on me than I've heard so far...)
Doug (Sluggo) KROQ, WXRK, Sirius Satellite, Los Angeles CA

(PS - at the moment LET THE MUSIC PLAY by Shannon is on my RIO - coincidence?)

AUSTIN CITY LIMIT-TATIONS: SXSW Day one

I went, and I had a blast! I went with an agenda…which very few do…because let’s face it; usually you don’t get hardly any of it done. But, I stuck to my plan. Fly in on Wednesday afternoon, and fly back to LA on Friday morning.

This is known as enjoy a couple of days before people start getting tired of seeing you over and over. Guess what? It worked. One of my handicaps is that I don’t drink…so staying into Saturday wouldn’t have satisfied me much. Don’t get me wrong…drink all you want, It doesn’t bother me, at least I know how to handle myself among a bunch of people on the verge of maybe, saying the wrong things to the wrong person. Ha. Anyway…it really was a great hang.

I want to thank WXTW’s JJ Fabini, one of the real true ‘good guys’ around, for allowing me to stay with him in his hotel room at The Embassy Suites North. We have known each other for many years, and I enjoyed my visit to Ft. Wayne two years ago. JJ and I have pretty much the same temperament. Having said that, it’s hysterical on how many differences we have about TV shows and films-lol.

I arrived around 4PM on Wednesday and went directly to the hotel. JJ said he would meet me there a few minutes after I arrived at the hotel. I sat in the lobby for about 5 minutes, and the first person I see is Dave Darus, now of Kirtland Records. He came over and sat down next to me and we caught up. Beautiful! That was #1 on list…to go to the Kirtland BBQ, and then later on that night go to Stubbs to see the Burden Brothers.

JJ arrived and Dave bid us farewell until we would see him again in about an hour. I washed up, brushed my teeth…and said, “let’s rock”!

We headed over to Stubbs and man…the BBQ was the best I’ve had in a long time. Simple, but awesome. Then, JJ and I went across the street to a place called 710 and sat and talked for quite some time until a band got on stage, and then we watched a little and listened. The band was Hobble. Great rhythm section. I’d take the bass player and the incredible drummer and put them behind a better guitarist and a lead singer who could truly sing. Overall…they were awful.

After farting around there long enough…it was back to Stubbs. We met up with and TVT’s John Perrone and Gary Jay. I’m really happy we got there early. Detroit’s The Sights were the first band up. Loved ‘em. Great songs, both new and some older ones I was familiar with. They are everything that keeps me excited about music. Pure and natural. Singer Eddie Baranek is a tiny man in person (I spoke with him briefly and took the photo on this page), but on stage is a giant. They have a new album arriving soon on New Line.

Then the Burden Brothers came out and kicked assssssss!

It was pretty cold that night, and after almost 6 hours, JJ and I decided to split and go back to the hotel and just relax for the next day. That was cool with me. The next day I was going to go to the Digital Music International showcase, and then to TVT’s showcase, so I felt day one was a huge success considering relatively how short of time I was in Austin.-Jonathan

Tomorrow...day two
*Even though I think my digital camera seems to be getting ready to take a
dump...you can view all the pictures I took by going to a new album I created

Stephensons Rocket changes name to Vitriolic

Hi Jonathan, thanks for the review of the track Revolution you ran on your site. The band after much soul searching have changed their name to Vitriolic. We have just got out of the studio with 3 live recorded tracks this link will take you to it, let us know what you think. www.maxximus.net/vitriolic

This is my cringe worthy story!!! To this day it makes me feel uneasy. When I worked for Sony Music in the UK I met a load of stars at a conference they held in Brighton, at the Grand Hotel. I was very drunk and that is my defence.

I was awarded Album sales rep of the year and as such had to walk up onto stage accept the award from Sony Music VP John Aston and bugger off back to my seat. Easy!!! No one told me I was even up for the award so I started drinking very early, free bar etc, it would have been rude not to , do you see. There were about 700 people in the banqueting hall when my name was read out. I was the only person not to hear it.

They called it out again and then I weaved my way through the tables to ascend the staircase to the stage. Pretty tricky when the steps look tiny and you have no balance. When I turned round and saw the likes of George Michael et all, looking back at me I went a bit funny. I didn't know you weren't supposed to give an acceptance speech, and there was a live microphone right beside me. Bad planning I think on their part.

Well, all my work colleagues were at the back of the hall shouting and cheering. Being typically British the done thing is to be self depreciating in this situation. Completely blocking out all the other people in the room in my mind, and in my mind directing the speech to them, I attempted to say "well if I won this award you lot must be shit, thank you and goodnight". What actually came out of my mouth was, "Thank you, you lot are shit goodnight". There was a shocked gasp and silence as I made my way back to my seat. It wasn't until the next morning it dawned on me I had addressed the whole gathering as shit!!! I sneaked out of the hotel the next morning and it wasn't until the following Monday I found out I had been dancing with Bangkok Lady boys on the stage that the company had hired for entertainment. This piece of genius probably saved my job as they thought I was eccentric and slightly deranged, rather than plain rude. Cheers!

I should have been the one to introduce U2 into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
By Michael T Mena

”I can't believe the news today Oh, I can't close my eyes and make it go away”

--from Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2

I was on the elliptical trainer cardio machine at Gold’s Gym when I heard (or read on the closed captions) that U2 had been voted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame. I love this band and was thrilled to hear the wonderful news. But after allowing this to sink in, it became abundantly clear that I should be at the induction ceremony, standing at the podium, telling the story of the power of their music and how that music changed my life. I should be the one to hand them their awards.

Who am I to think I should have this prestigious honor? After all, typically the Hall uses other musicians to do the induction speech. Cheryl Crow introduced Fleetwood Mac. Robbie Robertson inducted Eric Clapton and Clapton returned the favor. Kid Rock introduced fellow motor city musician Bob Seger and Bono himself has introduced more hall of famers then any other presenter. So again, why the audacity to think I am worthy? I do have credentials. I am a voting member of NARAS (the people who put on the Grammy Awards). I have attended the Grammies twice, accompanying bands I signed to the music industries most prestigious banquet. Neither act picked up a gramophone but getting there is still noteworthy. I was awarded radio promotion person of the year twice by music industry trade the Album Network. I have collected many other victories but none of them are as significant as the credential of being a U2 fan. U2 has clearly demonstrated that the most important person to them is the “fan.” I am stepping forward as a representative for the millions of U2 fans around the world. The fact that I believe I can make a difference in the world at the jaded age of 44 is due to the constant inspiration from a little band from Ireland called U2.

At an age where I should be more concerned with my cholesterol and/or calorie intake then my music, I remain unashamed to say that I am a HUGE fan. I have “been stuck” in so many U2 moments in my life and I would not trade any one for gold or platinum. These reflections will demonstrate with unwavering clarity that I should have been picking out a suit and heading to the big apple this past Monday.

I grew up about 45 miles from NYC in a town called Farmingdale. It was my older brother Paul who introduced me to U2. Paul used to trek into the city on an almost weekly basis to scour the independent record stores searching for great new music. On one occasion he returned with an import single of the U2 song “I Will Follow”. This tune became the new soundtrack to my life. The opening guitar chords rang like a brilliant awakening not unlike the joy of a child when he wakes up on Christmas morning. And the lyrics! They were powerful in their simplicity with unbelievable spiritual overtones. I memorized every word and sang along like no one was listening. It can be argued that the long term success of U2 is because unlike most rock n’ rollers, they sold their soul to god instead of the devil and were blessed with eternal quality. It might be difficult for anyone to dispute this theory. By the way, like the brother who introduced me to U2, Paul is Bono’s real name. Coincidence? I think not!

Music has long played a prominent role in my life. Nearly every major moment in my existence can be chronicled, date stamped and summarized by a song. Graduation from High School? “My Best Friend’s Girl” by The Cars. A nasty break-up? “One More Time” by Joe Jackson. A sign that now is a time for new beginnings? “Right Here, Right Now” by Jesus Jones. The yearning to find myself? “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” by U2. I could go on and on. I’m one of those people who can quote a song lyric for nearly every situation in life. When someone shakes, you might hear me say “shake it like a Polaroid picture” (courtesy of Outkast). Life has thrown some interesting curves my way. Through a tumultuous existence of constant change (“Changes” by David Bowie) the one consistency is my passion for music. At the core of that passion is the music of U2.

I was involved in promoting college radio when I heard Bono thank the format for their support on a nationally televised Grammy broadcast. Although the college radio legion was represented by thousands of people, I felt his thanks were meant for me personally as well as every one of us involved with college radio. His thanks meant a great deal at the time because what we were doing at college radio was not important to the major labels. It almost felt like this music was subversive at the time. During that era, (the early to mid 80’s), the alternative music department at major record labels can be likened to an unwanted bastard child.

My most meaningful U2 experience came to me was when I was music director for my college radio station, WNYT in Old Westbury, NY. The record rep for IRS Records had invited me to the Ritz to see a band called The Alarm. I liked the Alarm so I was more then happy to go. After the performance the record rep asked me if I wanted to go backstage to meet the band. I figured, why not! We walked backstage and I could swear that a mysterious glow filled the room. (Mike Peters, Dave Sharp, Nigel Twist and Eddie MacDonald) were all there with various other people. But it seemed like the world slowed down and the noise filtered out because the room also contained Ireland’s favorite son, better known as Bono. One by one, the IRS Records rep introduced me to the Alarm. I was courteous but distracted. I wanted to meet Bono but did not want to be disrespectful to my hosts. As I met numerous people, I kept stealing glances to see where the singer was. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted Bono trying to make an exit out of the dressing room. With catlike reflexes, I gently grabbed his arm.

“I’m sorry I grabbed you. I’m such a huge fan and I had to meet you.”

“Hi. What’s your name?”

“Mike. My name is Mike.”

He extended his hand and said: “Mike, it’s a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for saying hello. That’s very kind of you. But I really have to go.”

I was floored. I had met my hero and he said my name! I was young and had not yet learned that sometimes, meeting your heroes can be a disappointment because they are not always as gracious as you hoped they might be. This was not the case with U2’s singer. Although the moment only lasted a few seconds, Bono made me feel important. A Caribbean bartender I once met told me that “the greatest respect one person can bestow upon another is to listen to him when he needs to be heard.” Bono gave me that respect 21 years ago and I have not forgotten it.

Because of U2 and my love of music, I was inspired to pursue a career in the record industry (not knowing at the time that the industry is not as pro-music as I hoped). I started my career in the mailroom of A&M Records. I worked my way through the system in promotion, A&R and marketing and worked with various labels achieving the position of managing director at one company. This navigation through the corporate structure helped me understand the pecking order in business as well as in life. I never agreed with the pecking order, but I understood it. This understanding brings us full circle to the original question: Why should I be the one to stand at the podium to introduce into the U2Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame? Because I am a fan. My speech will be short. It will be heartfelt. And when I walk away from the podium, no one will question why I was chosen.

Birthday's today: Terrance Trent D'Arby, Bret Michaels (Poison), Fabio, Ry Cooder,
Mike Love (Beach Boys), Sly Stone, David Cronenberg, Tony Gee, Judd Hirsch

Ah, those lovable celebrity encounters

I meet Liam Nessan when he was filming the movie Leap of Faith in Amarillo. There was a bunch of us at a sports bar for a birthday party. He was at a table with Lucas Haas and some other actress from the movie. They bought us a round of drinks so my friend and I went over to thank them. I told Liam he was so cool in that Miami Vice episode where he played an Irish terrorist. It was very Chris Farley on SNL. Needless to say, he thought I was a total loser, then he put the moves on my friend. This was before Schidlers List, so he wasn't that big yet.
Marcie Robinson PD KACV, Amarillo TX

For me, after all the rock stars and interviews with some popular celebrities, it would have to be Demi Moore. She was the Maid of Honor at my cousin's wedding, so we actually hung out. It was right after the movie About Last Night. I was 17, she was 24. We actually spent a lot of time hanging out. At the rehearsal dinner and afterwards as well as at the wedding. We danced several times at the wedding. Needless to say I was in heaven. If I would have known then that she liked younger guys, I could have been "the one". Would she remember me today, probably, vaguely, but I will take that anyday.
Johnny Maze PD Rock 93.9 WRXW, Jackson MS

Had many of them. The coolest is when I was doing nights at 'PXY. There was the up in smoke tour in town, so I said I would give anyone who could get me anyone on the tour to call in tix to any concert they wanted. I ended up getting Proof (Eminem's righthand man) and their Dj to come in studio. Then, after we went out and got shitfaced.

I've got two: #1: It's gotta be Henry Rollins after a spoken-word show he did here in Cincinnati a couple of years ago. The biggest surprise was that while he's built like a tank, he's short as hell. #2: meeting my evil twin, Pat DiNizio. Either way, that's one man you don't want to piss off. ;)

I was in NYC the day after St. Pat's in the early 80's and a freak snowstorm hit the city, dropping like 6"...it pretty much shut the city down...I was in a bar on the upper East Side with about half a dozen other people in the place, 3 of which were James Taylor, Jimmy Buffet & John David Souther. On any given night, at the bar on one of the four floors you could see the likes of Iggy, Bowie, David Jo, Sid & Nancy, Richard Hell, David Lee, and Robin Williams.

It was a hideaway for the famous to get fucked up without any papparazzi. For a while, the cast of Saturday Night Live made us their destination for their after-after party. One night, while I was deep into a mix, someone snuck in the DJ booth and with his back to me, he started flipping through my record collection. Before I noticed who it was, I yelled "HEY, are you browsing or you gonna buy something???" The man spun around and started laughing and asked me if I wanted to do a bump. It was John Belushi. He locked the door to the booth and hung out in the booth with me until late the next afternoon. At about 1 PM, he asked if I could drive him uptown to visit some friends, so off we went on a wild ride. This was not the last ti
